Tug Of War Shaping Up Over Bob Marley’s Guitar

Bob Marley’s Yamaha SG1000 was considered a prized catch for Christie’s when the auction house put the guitar on the block for sale this past November. Bids were expected to range between $30,000 and $40,000. Turns out, however, the guitar may not have belonged to Angus Reid, who submitted the guitar, but rather to Wailers bassist Aston Barrett.

Claiming Marley gave him the Yamaha following the Wailers final 1979 world tour, Barrett is suing Reid and also seeking $50,000 in compensation from Christie’s. He’s seeking the safe return of the guitar as well, saying he simply passed the Yamaha along to Reid in 2000 for "safekeeping."

Yamaha presented the guitar to Marley when he visited the Yamaha factory in Hamamatsu during the Japan leg of the tour. Photographs of the reggae star playing in Tokyo and Osaka were included with the auction sale. At press time, further details regarding the whereabouts of the guitar, or the original sale, were not available.
