PS3 price cut imminent?

Sony fanatics may be preoccupied with chatter about a slick new PSP 4000, but it's the PS3 that's snatching headlines today, with word growing that a price cut is imminent.

The chaps at gamesindustry.biz have picked up on chatter from analyst Mark Hickey, who says "recent channel checks" indicate Sony is planning to slash $100 off the price of the hub in the US. That could translate to a £50 drop here in the UK.

Sony is still struggling to match the staying power of the Xbox 360 and the constant dominance of the Wii at the top of the charts. A price cut could help shift units, but with the Big S losing cash on every hub already, surely it's a dangerous move for a company already in financial peril.

Watch MKV Video Files in Windows Media Center

In case you're not familiar with it, MKV is a video-file format like Divx and MPEG-4. In fact, it's a format you're likely to encounter if you routinely download videos via BitTorrent.

You'd think that installing the right codec would enable MKV playback in Media Center, but, alas, it doesn't. Fortunately, there is way to enjoy your MKV videos from the comfort of your couch. Here's how. (Note: I tested this on a 32-bit Vista system. Your mileage may vary.)

Download and install the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP), then reboot your system.

Start Notepad, then copy and paste the following lines:

Gameloft shows multiplayer Let’s Golf for iPhone, iPod touch

Gameloft has released details on its upcoming Let’s Golf game for the iPhone and iPod touch, which appears set to become the most thoroughly developed golf title yet for the platform. Let’s Golf features cartoonish 3D graphics, four customizable 3D characters, and arcade-style game play with 63 different holes set across four different landscapes, including Fiji Beach, American Mountains, English Countryside, and Scotland Lochs. In addition, the game will offer two control schemes—one for more casual players that uses a simple gauge, and a more advanced mode that provides better accuracy. Notably, Let’s Golf will also include a multiplayer mode that allows two users to play over a local Wi-Fi or online connection. The title is expected to hit the App Store next week and will sell for $6.

PSP-4000 to Have Sliding Screen?

Excited about the new PSP? Well too bad, we're going to talk about it anyway. The fairly popular Sony handheld device has undergone some helpful but rather basic upgrades since the original model made its debut, but sources claim that the upcoming PSP-4000 will undergo a large redesign. And no, the new edition will not carry a PSP 2 title, or so the sources claim.



According to gaming blog VG247, the PSP-4000 will see a "complete aesthetic overhaul" for the handheld, based on existing PSP tech. Details are still on the shy side, but what they do know is that the revamped PSP will include a sliding front screen, and is said to closely resemble the fan-made image shown here, which has been making its way around the Internet. The PSP-4000 had a rumored release date for sometime in 2009, and according to VG247's source, that schedule remains accurate.

God of War 3 review (Picture & Trailer)

When God of War arrived on the PS2 in 2005, it changed 3D action games forever and became one of the most highly acclaimed titles on the console. The gory action, brilliant presentation and sex mini-games made God of War and its sequels a must have on the PS2 and PSP. Naturally, we were all excited to see the first HD avatar come to life on the PS3. Well, the wait is over now and GOW 3 is a reality with the first batch of screenshots out. As expected, they look stunning. The game adds a lot more to the tried and tested GOW formula and does so at 1080p glory.



The first thing you should do is start streaming the video below, and witnesses the glorious visuals. This is running real-time on the PS3 and isn't a pre rendered trailer. The video showcases some major changes in the gameplay, which includes hooking onto enemies and wall running.





Let's get into the details:

True HD: The game looks really good, and I guess most of you will agree with me. Kratos on the PS2 was made up of approximately 4000 polygons, this time he is made up of 20,000. According to a Sony exec, you couldn't even load the new Kratos on the PS2, forget slicing and dicing enemies.



Scale: The game is huge in terms of scale. I am talking about more enemies on screen (15 in the last game, this time around about 50!). Not only do you fight against Cyclops's and Centaurs, but you also get to control them. You see when fighting against a horde of 50 enemies, Kratos can use a little help and what better than a one-eyed brute.




Titan Combat: In simple words, you can control humongous Titans and fight against other titans, enough said.

Smarter AI: The game will put you against 50 enemies at a time, which is kind of unfair. What's worse is that once a commander steps into the field, the usually dumb AI will act smarter and attack as per his command. This leads to a very exciting proposition, wherein your primary objective is to kill an enemy commander first, so as to dumb down the AI.



Weapon Switch: The game will boast of some really cool weapons and each will be as exciting and intense as the Blades of Chaos. The coolest aspect is the instant weapon switch, so you can start a blades combo and end it with Cestus (those shiny lion-head gloves).




New Moves: Kratos can now grab enemies and rush through a large horde, using the enemy unit as a battering ram. You can also hook onto enemies and pull yourself closer to deal damage.



The game looks really promising. It's still months away from release, but what I have seen till now is good enough to make me want it real bad. This is the epic finale and the last in the series, and its shaping up very good. Enjoy the video, savor the screens and keep watching this space for more info.

Mozilla Says iPhone Jailbreaking is Legal

Mozilla is now actively backing a movement that, if successful, would essentially nullify copyright infringement charges against individuals that ‘jailbreak’ their Apple iPhones – a practice that Apple considers illegal.

Mozilla, the makers of the widely popular open source browser project Firefox, said in comments submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office that it supports the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in its request for an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The EFF wants the Copyright Office to let users ‘jailbreak’ their iPhones without fear of copyright infringement issues.

Apple naturally opposes this request claiming that the act of ‘jailbreaking’ an Apple iPhone is in direction violation of copyright laws which protect its software.

Study: Most Free iPhone Apps Have One-Night Stands

An analytics company recently conducted a study that found most free iPhone apps are rarely used after the first day they're downloaded.

In fact, only 20 percent of users use free apps again after the first day they're downloaded, according to Pinch Media, who based its analysis on trends seen in 30 million downloads. And within a month, most users stop using the app altogether.

The problem for developers? Advertising revenue. Advertisers shell out cash not just based on the number of downloads, but also how often each app is used. In other words, if you're hoping to make it big like iShoot developer Ethan Nicholas, just know it's extremely difficult to rake in money with a free iPhone app given the quick drop-off.

I can certainly vouch for the analysis. I'm especially picky about what stays on my iPhone springboard, and I'd say I delete about 90 percent of free apps a day after I download them. What are your thoughts?

New U2 album makes early P2P debut

Some bands welcome the exposure that P2P file sharing gives their music. U2 is not one of those bands. They recently announced plans to release just one single from their upcoming album, "No Line On The Horizon" as a free download. Before they were ready to do that it seems the entire album has made it way onto P2P networks.

It apparently started with an Australian online music store putting the tracks up for sale early. Someone at the store, GetMusic, noticed and it was removed, but not before several people had managed to buy it. As you would expect torrents quickly appeared on trackers like The Pirate Bay.

This isn't the first time a U2 album has been available via P2P before its official release. In 2004 "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" appeared on the internet more than two weeks ahead of its official debut. The new album isn't slated for release until March 2.

Perhaps their management will see this as another opportunity to call out ISPs, for not spying on their customers.

Skype integration headed to Nokia, Ericsson phones

Today at the Mobile World Congress, Skype, Ericsson and Nokia have announced that they will enter into a partnership that will place the Skype software on a few Nokia and Ericsson smartphones.

The first Nokia handsets to to have Skype integrated will be N-Series smartphones, and the upcoming N97 will be the first handset to have it when it launches in June.

According to Electronista, "the software for Nokia handsets will allow N97 owners to make and receive free Skype-to-Skype voice calls over Internet hotspots or their 3G data connections. They will havethe ability to make low-cost Skype calls to landlines and mobile devices. Users will also be able to see which of their Skype contacts are online and instantly message them."

Owners of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will be able to download the Skype software next month for free, added the company.

The VoIP company has been striking deals recently, bringing Skype integration to Android-based phones and noting that integration may hit the iPhone soon as well.

Casinos warned of iPhone app that helps count cards

A dictionary will define "card counting" as a "card game strategy used to determine when a player has a probability advantage."

Bearing that in mind, Nevada gambling regulators have begun warning Las Vegas casinos that there is an effective card-counting program available in the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

Although card counting as a practice is not illegal in Nevada, using a device to help you count cards is considered a felony.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board was tipped off by regulators in California "where officials at an Indian casino found customers using it and tipped state authorities."

Nokia starts App Store rival

Today, the Ovi Store has been officially launched by the handset maker, with a launch date set for early May.

The store will merge Nokia's current Download!, MOSH and WidSets services into one platform that will allow users to buy applications, utilities and games to their S40- and S60-based phones. The platform will also include video and podcast downloads, as well as wallpapers and widgets.

Something to note about the service is its strong emphasis on "location-based content." Media will be highlighted and featured based on the person's current location and if given permission, the store "will also be able to flag items downloaded by peers in a person's social network."

The first handset to have support for the store preloaded is the upcoming N97 coming in June, but the company adds those with existing devices will be given access as well through updates.

Apple sued over iPhone screen drawing tech

Piscel Technologies, a mobile software developer, has filed suite against Apple claiming that the graphics rendering technology used in the iPhone and iPod touch infringes on Piscel’s patents. The complaint claims that Apple’s methods for accelerating movements such as panning and zooming effectively copy Piscel’s own acceleration technologies. Piscel currently supplies software to other mobile manufacturers such as Sharp, Motorola, and Palm, although it is unclear whether these relationships involve the specific rendering technologies referenced in the suit. Piscel is seeking full damages according to the number of iPhone OS devices already sold, in addition to punitive damages equaling triple the original damages amount.

Shake or Date is relatively new iPhone app that guides you through various dating scenarios to help you make decisions based on what’s important to someone you’re interested in, based on that person’s experience(s) on dates. It can be played as a party game (think of it as a high-tech replacement of the good ol’ bottle), but also on your own, if you want to play it as a dating simulation.

To play the game, a group should gather around an iPod Touch or iPhone, read a dating scenario and see what other players do when faced with some dating situations. The person holding the device can moderate the game.

What’s interesting about Shake or Date is that it’s based on true dating stories collected from dozens of individuals, both men and women, from around the world…

You can now easily edit Google spreadsheets on your iPhone

Google updated spreadsheets this weekend with some new features across the board. While they are all useful, it is particularly nice to be able to edit spreadsheets on my iPhone.

– A mobile-friendly view with filtering, sorting and row-by-row editing

While this works in other mobile devices (Android, Symbian, etc), I've tested it on the iPhone and it works fairly well. You aren't going to be building complex spreadsheets on your iPhone anytime soon, but it is easy and straightforward to edit existing spreadsheets or even create a new one from scratch.

Apple: Jailbreaking iPhones and iPod touches is illegal

In comments filed with the U.S. Copyright Office related to a proposed new exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which would explicitly allow jailbreaking of iPhones, Apple has argued that jailbreaking constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, and is therefore illegal. The company claims that jailbroken iPhones depend on modified versions of Apple’s copyrighted bootloader and operating system software, and that these more open versions compromise safety, security, and reliability, along with making it easier for users who wish to pirate software. In the days following the iPhone’s release, Apple actively combatted jailbreaking through changes to the device’s software; it had appeared to give these measures less attention since the launch of iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store, which provides a legal way to add applications to the devices.

Blow a kiss with your iPhone on Valentine's Day

This iPhone/iPod Touch application is aptly called "Blow a Kiss" and can be downloaded for free at Apple's App Store. I tried it on my iPhone 3G and it worked wonders: once launched, you are required to type in your name, plus the recipient's name and e-mail address and a short message. Then you just blow into the phone's screen (I tried some audible smooching and that worked, too).

The app then detects the kissing sound and automatically sends an e-mail to the recipient. The e-mail is adorned with hearts and displays the message in an eye-dazzling pink theme. I believe most ladies would like this very, very much.

‘iBoo’ iPod docking station debuts

Speakal — maker of the novelty iPod speaker systems the iPig and iPanda — has released the iBoo. It’s a new iPod speaker system that looks like a ghost. The iBoo is priced at $89.99.

Available in red, white or blue, the iBoo sports two speakers in its “eyes” with a downward-firing subwoofer hidden below — together the system outputs 15 watts.

The smiley face below the eyes acts as a sensor for receiving commands from an included remote control. The remote offers audio controls and iPod menu controls.

The iBoo rests on four feet which are rubberized to prevent rattling when the subwoofer is on. The iBoo also sports “human touch” volume control.

An iPod dock is built in, and it includes various cradles to fit different sizes of iPod. A 3.5mm input jack lets you connect other portable devices, laptop computers and more.

Use of iPod Touch for Web browsing catching up to smartphones

AdMob’s January report shows Apple’s iPod Touch with the highest rate of growth among mobile devices capable of browsing the Internet.

The number of worldwide requests from the iPod Touch rose from 4.7 percent in December to 7.4 percent in January, by far the biggest increase of any mobile device. The iPhone’s share rose from 10.8 percent to 11 percent.

Last month an AdMob report on ad requests from mobile devices showed the iPod Touch second only to the iPhone . AdMob supplies online ads to such devices, most of which are cell phones.

How to convert DVD and video to BlackBerry Storm

Step1, Download and install the BlackBerry Storm converter, and then run it.

Here we can load three kinds of DVD's:

2. DVD ISO image, you can amount your ISO files in the daemon tools and then load the virtual DVD drive.

Step3. Select Profile, Subtitle, Audio, output directory setting

After you load DVD into the software, click the Profile drop-down list to select the proper format according to your BlackBerry Type, this guide is mainly about how to convert DVD and video to BlackBerry Storm, so we select the "BlackBerry Storm series(*.mp4)" profile.


Regular DVD movies usually have several subtitles such as English, French, German, etc. You can select one you prefer. Google launches Google Sync for iPhone

Google today launched a beta version of its Google Sync service for the iPhone and iPod touch. Google Sync is a two-way push synchronization service that works with Gmail contacts and Google Calendars, allowing users to update information from either their iPhone or iPod touch, using the built-in Calendar and Contacts applications, or from any traditional computer, using the web browser. Man dies after mobile phone explodes in his pocket

A man has died after a mobile phone reportedly exploded in his shirt pocket last Friday. The incident happened in a store in Guangzhou, China. The man worked as a shop assistent at the store, and reportedly had recently swapped out his handset's original battery for a new one. An employee at a nearby store heard the bang and went to investigate, only to find the man lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

Local media reports indicate that the explosion severed an artery in his neck, and he died from massive blood loss. A make and model of the handset has not yet been released by Police, but local media reported the fatal explosion occurred at a Lenovo store, but it is unclear whether it was an official outlet or a shop selling Lenovo products.

Reports of incidents such as this in the past usually involve the use of a low-quality third-party battery. Handset makers, and other manufacturers of consumer electronics products highly recommend that original batteries developed for the products are not swapped out for third-party batteries, particularly because of isolated incidents such as this one.

Google has just announced a new way to manage your Gmail Tasks from your mobile device or your iGoogle homepage.

First, you'll want to have enabled the new Tasks feature in Gmail Labs. Then, from your iPhone or other mobile device, just navigate to http://gmail.com/tasks to view, add, edit, or complete your tasks.
